49er Sail Branding

The 49er and 49er FX are two of the most exciting boats in Olympic sailing — fast, physical and unforgiving. If you're racing one in Australia, you already know that every detail matters on the water. Your sail branding is no different.

At MTM Signage we're a licensed supplier of class-legal sail branding for both the 49er and 49er FX, supplying competitive sailors across Australia from our Newport workshop on Pittwater. Here's everything you need to know before you order.

About the 49er and 49er FX

The 49er is an Olympic class skiff sailed by two people — one of the fastest and most technically demanding boats on the water. The 49er FX is the women's equivalent, introduced to the Olympic program in 2016 and now one of the most competitive women's sailing classes in the world.

Both classes have strong Australian fleets with a national regatta circuit and a direct pathway to Olympic selection. Australian sailors have represented the country at Olympic level in both classes, making the 49er program one of the most prestigious in Australian sailing.

Licensed supplier — what does that mean?

MTM Signage is a licensed supplier of class-legal sail branding for the 49er and 49er FX. This means our branding is produced to the exact specifications required by the class rules and approved for racing at all levels of competition — from club racing through to national championships and international regattas.

When you order from a licensed supplier you can be confident your branding will pass measurement and comply with the Racing Rules of Sailing. It removes the risk of turning up to a regatta with non-compliant numbers and facing a protest or disqualification before you've even started.

What sail branding do 49er and 49er FX sailors need?

Unlike some classes where sail numbers are the primary requirement, 49er and 49er FX sail branding typically includes:

  • Sail numbers — your unique class-issued sail number displayed on the mainsail and jib to class specifications.

  • Country code — the three-letter country code displayed on the mainsail alongside your sail number, identifying your nationality at international regattas and required under the Racing Rules of Sailing.

  • Class flags — the official 49er and 49er FX class flag insignia, applied in the correct position and size as specified in the class rules.

  • Sponsor graphics — many 49er and 49er FX teams carry sponsor logos on their sails, hulls and equipment. We produce sponsor graphics to match your sponsor's brand guidelines and apply them correctly alongside the class-required elements.

  • Hull graphics — team branding, sponsor logos and hull numbers for the boat itself, applied in marine-grade vinyl built to handle the conditions on the water.

Why licensed branding matters for 49er racing

The 49er class rules are specific about the size, placement, font and colour of sail numbers and class insignia. Get these wrong and your boat may not pass measurement at a national or international event.

As a licensed supplier we stay up to date with the current class rules and produce every set of branding to the correct specifications. You focus on your sailing — we'll make sure the paperwork side of your boat is sorted.

Materials — what we use and why

Sail branding on a 49er takes a serious beating. The boat is sailed hard, the sails are loaded heavily and the environment — saltwater, UV, mechanical flex — is demanding.

We use premium marine-grade vinyl specifically selected for high-performance sail applications:

  • Flexible — moves with the sail under load without cracking or lifting along seam lines

  • UV stable — holds colour through an Australian summer without fading

  • Lightweight — won't affect sail trim or performance

  • Durable — built to last multiple seasons with correct care

We don't cut corners on materials because the difference between quality marine vinyl and standard vinyl becomes very obvious very quickly on a 49er.

Sponsor graphics — getting your partners on the boat properly

If your team carries sponsor logos, getting them right matters — both for your relationship with your sponsors and for the overall look of your boat. A poorly printed or misaligned sponsor logo reflects badly on the team and the sponsor.

We work with teams to produce sponsor graphics that match brand guidelines accurately — correct colours, correct proportions and correctly applied alongside your class-required branding. If your sponsors provide artwork files we'll work with those directly. If not, we can help get the files into the right format for production.

The installation process

We don't just supply the branding — we install it. Here's how the process works when you come to us:

  1. You get in touch with your sail number, class (49er or 49er FX) and any sponsor requirements.

  2. We confirm the specifications and produce your branding to class rules.

  3. We arrange a time to apply the branding — either at our Newport workshop.

  4. We apply everything precisely, check alignment and make sure every edge is fully adhered.

  5. You're race-ready.

Most jobs are turned around quickly — get in touch as early as possible before a regatta to make sure we have time to produce and apply everything properly.
