Window Frosting & Privacy Film
If you've got glass that's letting in too much, too soon, window frosting is one of the simplest, most effective fixes available. We produce frosted and privacy window film for offices, clinics, consulting rooms, studios, and homes across Sydney's Northern Beaches.
This page is about glass treatments for privacy, glare control, and decorative finish — not retail shopfront signage. Looking for shopfront window graphics? That's covered on our Shopfront Signage page.

HOW IT WORKS
1. What window frosting actually does
Privacy without losing the light
The appeal of frosted film comes down to one trade-off it solves better than almost anything else: privacy without closing yourself into a dark room. Blinds and curtains block the view, but they also block the light. Frosted film diffuses light as it passes through the glass, so the room stays bright while the detail on the other side disappears into a soft blur — ideal for a consulting room that needs to feel open, an office relying on borrowed light, or a bathroom window that would otherwise need to stay shut behind a blind.
Does frosted film block all visibility?
Not entirely. Frosted film obscures detail — faces, objects, screens — but isn't a fully opaque barrier like a wall. At a distance with even lighting, it provides strong privacy. Right up close with a bright light directly behind the glass, a vague shape can sometimes still be perceived. This matters most at night: when the interior is lit and the exterior is dark, contrast can make shapes more visible than during the day. For night-time priority situations — a ground-floor bathroom facing a footpath — we can recommend a heavier, more opaque film.

Privacy without losing the light
Frosted film
Soft, even, matte texture. Diffuses light and obscures detail both ways. Most consistent performer.
Etched-look film
Similar effect, slightly different texture or sheen. Often chosen for a more premium, decorative look.
One-way reflective
Strong daytime privacy via reflection. Loses the effect at night once interior lights are on.
For most office, clinic, and home applications we recommend standard frosted film — the most consistent performer across different lighting conditions.
WHERE IT'S USED
2. Where window frosting gets used
Offices and meeting rooms
Open-plan offices are great for collaboration and terrible for confidentiality. Glass partitions around meeting rooms, manager's offices, and HR spaces let light travel through the floor while creating a visual barrier exactly where it's needed. Frosted bands or full panels stop a meeting feeling like it's happening in a fishbowl, without making the office feel closed off. Faster, cheaper, and fully reversible compared to installing solid walls.
Medical and allied health clinics
Consulting rooms, treatment spaces, and reception areas need visual privacy without feeling clinical or closed in. A frosted treatment lets the space stay bright and welcoming while ensuring a patient isn't visible from a corridor. For physio, psychology, dental, and GP clinics, this is often one of the most practical, lowest-disruption upgrades available — installed directly onto existing glass with no structural work.

Homes: bathrooms, ensuites, and street-facing windows
One of the most common residential applications. Bathroom and ensuite windows often face a side passage, neighbouring property, or street — full privacy without blocking the window's job of bringing in light and ventilation matters. Because it's a film rather than a permanent treatment, it can be removed later without replacing the glass. Street-facing living areas, home offices, and glazed front doors are other common home applications.
DECORATIVE & BRANDED
3. Decorative and branded frosting
Can you cut a custom design into frosted film?
Yes — a popular reason businesses choose frosted film over a plain tint. Rather than a uniform panel, the film can be cut into a logo, pattern, or decorative motif, with cut areas remaining clear glass and the surrounding area frosted (or vice versa). A functional privacy treatment that also reinforces your brand or adds design to a plain pane of glass.

Designing your frosting layout
MTM Signage doesn't have an in-house design team, but we can guide you through band height, coverage percentage, and placement, and connect you with a trusted designer for a fully custom concept. A logo as a vector file (AI, EPS, or PDF with outlined text) is the ideal starting point for a cut design.

PERFORMANCE
4. Glare, heat, and performance
Does window frosting reduce glare and heat?
Frosted film reduces glare by diffusing direct light rather than letting it pass through as a sharp, focused beam — a noticeable comfort improvement for a desk near a window or a meeting room with screen glare. Heat reduction is more modest with standard frosted film compared to specialised solar control films designed to block infrared and UV. If heat is the primary concern rather than privacy, tell us upfront — we can advise whether a standard product meets your needs or a combination approach makes more sense.
How long does frosted window film last?
A quality frosted film, properly installed, typically lasts well over a decade with minimal change in appearance. It doesn't fade, peel, or discolour the way cheaper products can, provided it's specified correctly and installed on a clean, properly prepared surface. Northern Beaches conditions — UV exposure and coastal humidity — are factored into the products we use, same as any of our outdoor work.

COMPLIANCE
5. Glass manifestation and safety compliance
What is glass manifestation and is it a legal requirement?
Manifestation means making glass visible so people don't walk into it — a real and surprisingly common injury cause with frameless or full-height glass. In Australia, AS 1288 (Clause 5.19, "Making Glass Visible") sets out manifestation requirements, referenced in the National Construction Code. Glass doors, sidelights, and full-height glazing in commercial and public-access buildings are the areas most commonly affected.
A frosted band or strip at the correct height is one of the most common and cost-effective ways to satisfy this requirement, and it can double as a design feature. Disability access requirements under AS 1428.1 also affect manifestation specifications where accessible design applies — mention this when you enquire if it's relevant to your premises.

Do I need manifestation strips on my office glass doors?
If you have glass doors, sidelights, or full-height glazing in a commercial space — particularly anywhere with public access — there's a strong chance manifestation applies. We're not building certifiers and can't issue compliance sign-off, but we can talk through what's commonly required and produce a compliant, well-positioned strip or band as part of your frosting job. For strict compliance requirements, confirm the specific requirement with your building certifier or landlord first.
PRICING
6. Getting started: process and pricing
Every glass job is different
Frosting and privacy film pricing depends on the size and number of panels, the type of film, access, and whether it's a straightforward full-panel job or a custom cut design. A single small consulting room window is a very different job to a full floor of office partitions, so we don't publish set prices — they wouldn't be accurate for most enquiries.
Frosting is one of the most cost-effective privacy upgrades available, especially compared to structural alternatives like new walls or replacing glass. Fast to install, minimal disruption, and changeable later if your needs change.
What affects the cost:
-
Number and size of glass panels or windows
-
Film type — standard frosted, decorative cut, or heavier privacy-grade
-
Access — ground floor vs upper levels or hard-to-reach glass
-
Custom artwork — a plain band vs a cut logo or pattern
-
Manifestation requirements — if compliance strips are needed
Getting a quote
The best way to get an accurate price is to contact us with the number and approximate size of the windows or panels involved, photos if you have them, and what you're trying to achieve — privacy, branding, compliance, or a mix. We'll come back to you within one business day with a clear, itemised quote. For larger commercial jobs, we'll arrange a site visit before quoting.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before getting in touch.
Frosted film obscures detail effectively — faces, objects, and activity become an indistinct blur rather than clearly visible. It isn't a fully opaque barrier like a solid wall, and in certain lighting conditions, particularly a bright light source directly behind the glass at close range, a vague shape or silhouette can sometimes still be perceived. For most office, clinic, and home applications, standard frosted film provides more than enough privacy for daily use.
Does frosted window film block all visibility, or can people still see shapes through it?
Does window film provide privacy at night when the lights are on inside?
Frosted film performs consistently in both day and night conditions because it works by diffusing light rather than relying on a reflective effect. Standard frosted film maintains its privacy performance after dark, making it more reliable year-round than reflective one-way film, which loses much of its daytime advantage once interior lights are on at night. If night-time privacy in a high-visibility location is your main concern, we can recommend a heavier or more opaque film.
Can frosting be applied to existing glass, or does it need to go on during construction?
Frosted and privacy film is designed to be applied directly to existing glass — there's no need for new construction or glass replacement. This is a key advantage over alternatives like sandblasted or acid-etched glass, which require the glass itself to be treated or replaced. We install directly onto your current windows, doors, or partitions, keeping the job fast with no disruption to the surrounding structure.
Can window frosting be removed without damaging the glass?
Yes — quality frosted film is designed to be removable. When eventually taken off, properly installed film comes away cleanly without damaging or marking the underlying glass, provided it's removed correctly. This is one of the reasons frosting is such a flexible option: you can remove it, replace it with a different design, or revert to clear glass without any lasting commitment.
What is glass manifestation and is it a legal requirement in Australian buildings?
Manifestation is the requirement to make glass visible so people don't accidentally walk into it, and it's a genuine safety standard under AS 1288, Clause 5.19, referenced in the National Construction Code. It typically applies to glass doors, sidelights, and full-height glazing, particularly in commercial and public-access buildings. A frosted band or strip at the correct height is a common, cost-effective way to meet this requirement, and we can produce it as part of your job — though for a formal compliance determination, check with your building certifier.
Is frosted film suitable for bathroom and ensuite privacy?
Yes, this is one of the most common residential uses we see. Bathroom and ensuite windows often face a neighbouring property, side passage, or street, and frosted film provides reliable privacy while still letting light and the window's normal ventilation function work as intended. It's also practical in older homes with windows that weren't originally designed with privacy glass, since it applies to the existing glass without replacement.
What's the best window film option for a medical or consulting room?
For most medical and allied health settings, standard frosted film strikes the right balance — reliable visual privacy for patients and confidential conversations while keeping the room feeling bright, open, and welcoming rather than clinical. If your space has specific requirements, such as a particular opacity for a treatment room facing a busy corridor, let us know the context when you enquire and we'll recommend the right specification.
Frosted vs tinted windows: what's the difference and which is better for an office?
Tinted film is primarily about reducing heat and glare from sunlight, and it typically keeps the glass transparent or only slightly darkened — it doesn't provide meaningful privacy on its own. Frosted film is specifically about obscuring visibility while still allowing light through, with a much smaller effect on heat reduction than a dedicated solar tint. For most office applications where the goal is privacy in meeting rooms or partitions, frosted film is the right choice; if heat and glare from direct sun is the primary issue, a solar tint or a combination approach may be more appropriate. Tell us which problem you're solving and we'll point you to the right product.
