If you're racing an ILCA — formerly known as the Laser — getting your sail numbers right isn't optional. World Sailing and the ILCA class association have strict requirements around sizing, placement, colour and materials, and non-compliant sail numbers can result in disqualification at regattas. At MTM Signage, we produce class-legal ILCA sail numbers and branding for sailors across Australia, shipped from our Newport workshop on Sydney's Northern Beaches. Here's everything you need to know.

What is the ILCA class?

The ILCA (International Laser Class Association) is one of the most popular sailing classes in the world, with three variants — the ILCA 4, ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 — catering to junior, women's and open categories respectively. The class is sailed competitively at every level from local club racing to the Olympic Games, making class compliance absolutely critical for competitive sailors.

ILCA sail number requirements

According to ILCA class rules and the Racing Rules of Sailing, sail numbers must meet the following requirements:

Sail numbers:

  • Must be the sailor's national authority registered sail number

  • Must be displayed on both sides of the sail

  • Numbers on the starboard side must be higher than those on the port side where they overlap

  • Must be a minimum height as specified by the class rules

  • Must be a single colour that contrasts clearly with the sail

Country codes:

  • Must be displayed above the sail number on both sides of the sail

  • Must follow the correct IOC country code for your nation — for Australian sailors this is AUS

  • Must meet minimum size requirements as specified by class rules

Red rhombus:

  • The ILCA red rhombus insignia must be displayed on both sides of the sail

  • Must be positioned correctly according to class rules

  • Must be the correct shade of red as specified by the class

What materials are class legal?

ILCA class rules specify that sail numbers and insignia must be made from materials that are compatible with the sail cloth and do not affect the sail's performance. At MTM Signage, all our ILCA sail branding is precision-cut from materials fully compliant with ILCA class regulations and the Racing Rules of Sailing.

We do not recommend using generic vinyl stickers from hardware or craft stores — these are often too thick, incompatible with sail cloth, and will likely fail inspection at a serious regatta.
