Vehicle Decals vs. a Full Vehicle Wrap: What's the Difference and Which Is Right for You?

If you've been thinking about getting your work vehicle branded, you've probably come across two options: vehicle decals or a full wrap. Both will get your business name on the road — but they're quite different in terms of cost, coverage, visual impact and what they're best suited to.

Here's a straightforward breakdown to help you decide which is right for your vehicle and your business.

What are vehicle decals?

Vehicle decals are individual pieces of cut or printed vinyl applied to specific parts of your vehicle — typically the doors, tailgate, bonnet or rear window. Think business name, logo, phone number and website in clean vinyl lettering or printed panels.

Decals are the most common type of vehicle signage for tradies and small businesses. They're cost-effective, fast to produce, look sharp and do exactly what vehicle signage is supposed to do — get your business name in front of people every time you drive past.

A typical tradie ute with door decals, tailgate branding and a logo takes a few hours to apply and will last 5–7 years with quality materials.

What is a full vehicle wrap?

A full wrap covers the entire surface of the vehicle in printed vinyl — every panel, every curve, the bonnet, the roof, the bumpers, everything. The result is a completely transformed vehicle that looks like it rolled off a custom production line.

Full wraps are printed with high-resolution graphics and can include photos, complex colour gradients, large-scale branding and full sponsor layouts. They're most commonly used by businesses that want maximum visual impact — think food trucks, promotional vehicles, large fleet operators and businesses where the vehicle itself is part of the brand experience.

A full wrap takes significantly longer to produce and apply than decals, and requires a higher level of skill to install correctly — particularly around mirrors, door handles, bumpers and other complex surfaces.

What about a partial wrap?

There's a middle ground that a lot of businesses don't know about — a partial wrap. This covers a large section of the vehicle, typically the rear, the sides or the bonnet, without going all the way around. You get significantly more visual impact than simple decals at a lower cost than a full wrap.

Partial wraps work particularly well on ute trays and truck sides where there's a large flat surface that takes printed graphics beautifully.

Which is right for you?

Here's a simple way to think about it:

Choose decals if:

  • You want clean, professional branding at the best value

  • Your vehicle is a standard ute, van or car

  • You need a fast turnaround

  • You want something that's easy to update if your branding changes

Choose a partial wrap if:

  • You want more visual coverage and impact than decals alone

  • You have a ute tray, truck side or large flat panel to work with

  • You want to include more design elements, colours or graphics

Choose a full wrap if:

  • You want your vehicle to be completely impossible to miss

  • Your vehicle is a core part of your brand or marketing strategy

  • You're running a promotional vehicle, food truck or large commercial fleet

  • You have the budget to do it properly

Does the material matter?

Yes — and this is worth knowing before you commit to anything.

For full wraps and complex curved surfaces, premium cast vinyl is the right choice. It's more flexible, conforms better to curves and panel edges, and holds its colour longer under the Australian sun. For simpler decals on flat surfaces, high-end polymeric vinyl with a protective laminate gives you excellent results at a more accessible price point.

At MTM Signage we assess each job individually and recommend the right material for what the job actually needs — so you're not paying for more than you need, and you're not getting less than your vehicle deserves.

What about the design?

Whether you go with decals or a wrap, the design is just as important as the materials and the installation. A poorly designed wrap printed on premium vinyl will still look poor. We guide you through the whole process — if you already have artwork we'll work with it, and if you need help getting your design sorted we'll point you in the right direction.
