NARRABEEN & NEWPORT · SYDNEY'S NORTHERN BEACHES

Shopfront Signage Sydney

Your shopfront is working for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Before a customer calls, visits your website, or walks through your door, your signage has already made an impression. MTM Signage produces custom shopfront signage for businesses across Sydney's Northern Beaches — from Narrabeen and Newport through to Manly, Dee Why, Brookvale, and Mona Vale — as well as greater Sydney.

We produce fascia signs, window graphics, and A-frames from our Newport workshop, and we can source and coordinate dimensional lettering and illuminated lightbox signs through our network of trusted suppliers.

WHY IT MATTERS

1. What shopfront signage can do for your business

First impressions on the street

Research consistently shows that the majority of customers decide whether to enter a business within seconds of seeing its exterior. Your shopfront sign is the single most visible marketing asset your business has — more visible than your website, your social media, or any advertisement you run. A well-designed, professionally produced sign tells people you're established, you care about quality, and you're worth their time and money.

For businesses on Sydney's Northern Beaches, this matters even more. The local community is tight-knit and reputation travels. A shopfront that looks sharp and professional reinforces every other touchpoint your customers have with your brand.

How far away can people read your shop sign?

As a general rule, 25mm of letter height gives approximately 7 metres of readable distance — so for a sign readable at 30 metres, your text needs to be at least 100mm tall. Colour contrast plays a big role too: white on navy, black on yellow, and white on deep green are among the most legible combinations in outdoor signage. We factor both legibility and contrast into every sign we produce.

Signs that attract customers vs signs that blend in

Signs that attract customers are clear rather than cluttered, use one or two strong fonts, lead with the business name, and use materials that suit the building and street. Limit your sign to two or three colours maximum — more than that reduces readability at a distance. A well-chosen contrast in material or finish can make your shopfront memorable without clashing with the streetscape.

SIGN TYPES

2. Types of shopfront signage we can provide

Fascia signs

A fascia sign sits above your shopfront, typically spanning the full width of the tenancy. It's the most prominent and most commonly requested type of shopfront signage, and it's what we produce directly in our Newport workshop.

Sizes vary by tenancy — a standard single-shop frontage typically calls for a sign between 600mm and 1200mm in height spanning the full width of the façade. We'll visit the site before quoting to confirm dimensions and fixings.

Aluminium composite panel (ACP)

Flat, durable, UV-printed or vinyl-faced. Our standard for all fascia sign production — the most practical and popular choice for Northern Beaches retail and commercial tenancies.

Window graphics and frosting

Window graphics are one of the most versatile and cost-effective shopfront signage options available. We produce printed window decals, cut vinyl lettering, frosted privacy films, and decorative window graphics from our Newport workshop — all working at pedestrian eye level, right where foot-traffic customers are looking.

Popular applications:

  • Trading hours and contact details

  • Promotional messaging

  • Brand graphics and logos

  • Privacy frosting for offices and consulting rooms

  • Seasonal campaigns

A-frames, corflute signs, and temporary signage

A-frames and footpath signs placed at pedestrian eye level outside your shopfront can significantly increase walk-in traffic for businesses that rely on passing trade. We produce A-frame inserts, corflute signs, and short-run temporary signage from our Newport workshop. Also the go-to for: seasonal promotions, now-hiring messages, event directions, and any signage that needs regular updates or removal. For businesses on busy Northern Beaches strips in Manly, Dee Why, and Brookvale, an A-frame is often the single highest-return signage investment available.

Dimensional lettering and illuminated lightbox signs

Available via our trusted supplier network

We don't produce dimensional lettering or illuminated lightbox signs in-house — but we're able to provide both through our network of trusted suppliers. We manage the whole process: briefing, quoting, quality checking, and coordinating installation. You deal with us, not with a supplier you've never met.

Dimensional (3D) lettering

Individual raised letters mounted to a wall or fascia. Creates depth, shadow, and a premium appearance flat signs can't match. Popular for professional services, clinics, beauty studios, and premium retail.

LED lightbox / illuminated signs

LED-backlit signs ensure visibility at any time of day. More energy-efficient than fluorescent or neon, with consistent illumination and a much longer service life. Ideal for businesses trading early morning, evening, or overnight.

Interested in either option? Include it in your enquiry and we'll provide a full quote covering supply, delivery, and installation.

MATERIALS

3. Materials: what works in Australian conditions

Outdoor signage in the Australian climate

Sydney's Northern Beaches presents a specific challenge: intense UV, coastal salt air, heavy rain, and high humidity. The three most common failure modes in outdoor signage — UV fading, delamination, and substrate warping — are all preventable with the right material specification from the outset. We don't cut corners on UV-stable inks, laminates, and substrates.

What lasts longest?

  • Vinyl on ACP — 5–7 years in direct sun with UV laminate. Our core material for fascia signs.

  • ACP — rigid, weatherproof, clean edges. Used for all our flat fascia sign production.

  • Powder-coated aluminium — extremely durable for frames, trims, and dimensional elements.

  • Acrylic — UV-stable grades for dimensional lettering and lightboxes. Resists yellowing in Australian sun.

  • PVC foam board — sheltered or semi-outdoor use only. Not for coastal exposed installations.

  • Timber — beautiful, but needs ongoing maintenance coastally. Sheltered applications only.

Indoor vs outdoor: what's the difference?

Indoor signs can use standard vinyl and unlaminated print. Outdoor signs need UV-stable inks, weatherproof substrates, UV laminate, and corrosion-resistant fixings. We always confirm the installation environment before specifying materials — a sign that fades or peels within a year isn't good value regardless of upfront cost.

DESIGN

4. Design: getting your shopfront sign right

Working with or without a designer

MTM Signage doesn't have an in-house design team, but that doesn't mean you're on your own. If you have a finished logo and brand guidelines, we work directly from those. If you need help, we connect you with trusted local designers. Artwork should ideally be supplied as a vector file — AI, EPS, or PDF with outlined text.

Colours, contrast and what works on a shopfront
  • Background colour of the building — your sign needs to contrast with it

  • Ambient light at your location — morning sun vs afternoon shadow

  • Neighbouring businesses — a different palette helps you stand out

  • Brand consistency — your sign should match your website and other materials

  • Limit your sign to two or three colours maximum — more than that tends to look busy and reduces readability at a distance.

Sign size and positioning for maximum visibility

Signs that attract customers are clear rather than cluttered, use one or two strong fonts, lead with the business name, and use materials that suit the building and street. Limit your sign to two or three colours maximum — more than that reduces readability at a distance. A well-chosen contrast in material or finish can make your shopfront memorable without clashing with the streetscape.

PRICING

5. How much does shopfront signage cost?

Every job is different

Shopfront signage pricing depends on a lot of variables — the type of sign, the size, the materials required, the complexity of the design, the installation environment, and whether council approval is needed. A fascia sign for a small tenancy in a sheltered location is a very different job to a full shopfront package for a corner site on a busy strip, and pricing reflects that.

Rather than publish prices that may not apply to your situation, we prefer to understand your project first and give you a quote that's accurate. That way, there are no surprises when you get back to us — and you're comparing like for like.

What affects the cost

  • Sign type — fascia, window graphics, A-frame, dimensional lettering, lightbox, or a combination.

  • Size — dimensions of the sign and the installation area.

  • Materials — ACP, vinyl, acrylic, aluminium, and laminate choices.

  • Design — whether you're supplying print-ready artwork or need design assistance.

  • Installation — access requirements, fixing type, and height.

  • Council approval — some signs require complying development approval or a DA.

Getting a quote

The quickest way to get a price is to send us an enquiry with your business address, the type of sign you're after, and any artwork or brand guidelines you have. A photo of your current shopfront is always helpful. We'll come back to you within one business day — and for most jobs, we'll arrange a site visit before quoting so we can give you an accurate number rather than a rough estimate.

Should you hire a professional or make your own sign?

For a permanent shopfront sign, the case for professional production is strong. A professionally produced sign will look better, last longer, and be installed correctly the first time. Your shopfront is seen by every person who passes — a sign that looks amateurish sends a signal about the quality of the business behind it.

When and how often to replace your shopfront sign

Well-maintained signs should last 5–10 years before requiring replacement. Key indicators: significant fading, peeling vinyl, physical damage, or a rebrand. In the Northern Beaches coastal environment, catching small issues early — a lifting edge, a loose fixing — is always cheaper than full replacement.

PROCESS

6. From brief to installed: how we work

Our process with shopfront clients

  • Initial enquiry — address, description, and any existing artwork or brand guidelines.

  • Site assessment — we visit to confirm measurements, building materials, and fixing points.

  • Quote — detailed and itemised, covering design, production or supply, and installation.

  • Artwork approval — you review and approve before anything is produced. No surprises.

  • Production or supply — ACP signs, window graphics, and A-frames made in Newport; dimensional and illuminated signs via our supplier network.

  • Installation — we install, leave the site clean, and show you the result before we leave.

Council approvals and development applications

In NSW, signage attached to a building often requires council approval — either as complying development or a full DA. In heritage areas and coastal zones on the Northern Beaches, the rules are stricter. We advise on what approvals are likely needed and can assist with documentation for standard approvals.

Seasonal and temporary signage

We produce vinyl window decals, corflute A-frames, short-run banners, and pull-up displays for promotions, seasonal campaigns, and now-hiring messages — without committing to permanent changes to your shopfront.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before getting in touch.

Shopfront signage pricing varies depending on the sign type, size, materials, and installation requirements — there's no one-size-fits-all answer. A simple window graphic is a very different job to a full illuminated fascia installation, and pricing reflects that. Rather than quote figures that might not apply to your situation, we prefer to understand your project first and give you an accurate, itemised quote. Send us an enquiry with your address and a description of what you're after, and we'll come back to you within one business day.

How much does a custom shop sign cost in Sydney?

What size should my shop sign be?

The right size depends on the width of your tenancy, the height of the fascia, and how far away your sign needs to be readable. Every 25mm of letter height gives approximately 7 metres of reading distance — so for legibility from 30 metres, text height should be at least 100mm. We visit your site before quoting to confirm the right proportions. Council regulations also set limits on sign dimensions in many locations, and we check those requirements as part of the process.

What are the best materials for outdoor shop signs in Australian weather?

For most Northern Beaches shopfronts, ACP with UV-laminated vinyl graphics is the most practical and durable choice — it handles UV exposure, coastal salt air, and rain without warping or corroding. For dimensional lettering, UV-stable acrylic and powder-coated aluminium are the two best options. Avoid PVC foam board and standard paper-faced substrates for fully exposed outdoor applications. We always specify materials matched to the installation environment.

Do I need council approval for a shopfront sign in NSW?

In most cases, yes. Many standard shopfront signs can be approved as complying development — faster than a full DA. Signs in heritage areas, coastal zones, or above certain dimensions generally require a DA. We'll assess your situation as part of the quoting process. Installing without approval risks a council order to remove the sign at your expense.

Can I use my existing logo and brand colours on my shopfront sign?

Absolutely — and for most clients, this is exactly what we do. If you have a vector file of your logo (AI, EPS, or PDF with outlined text), that's the ideal starting point. We adapt it for large-format signage and ensure colour consistency. If you only have a low-resolution logo, we can connect you with a designer to have it redrawn. We'll make sure your sign looks like it belongs to the same visual family as your other materials.

How long does shopfront signage last?

A well-produced shopfront sign should last 5–10 years with minimal maintenance. UV exposure, material quality, and the coastal environment are the main factors. We use UV-stable inks, appropriate laminates, and weatherproof substrates for all outdoor work. Regular inspection is worthwhile — catching small issues early is far cheaper than full replacement.

How do I order a custom shop sign near me?

Contact us through our enquiry page with your business address, a description of what you're after, and any existing artwork or brand guidelines. We'll respond within one business day and arrange a site visit if required. We work across Narrabeen, Newport, Manly, Dee Why, Brookvale, Mona Vale, Avalon, Palm Beach and greater Sydney.

What's the difference between a fascia sign and dimensional lettering?

A fascia sign is a flat ACP panel with your business name and logo printed or applied in vinyl, produced in our Newport workshop. Dimensional lettering consists of individual raised letters that create depth, shadow, and a more premium look. We don't produce dimensional lettering in-house, but we supply and coordinate it through our trusted supplier network. Many clients choose a combination — flat ACP with dimensional letters over it — and we can quote and deliver that as a complete package.
