If you've been thinking about getting your ute or van sign-written, one of the first questions you'll probably ask is: how long is this actually going to last? It's a fair question — vehicle signage is an investment, and you want to know you're getting your money's worth.

Here's the honest answer, plus a few tips on how to get the most out of your graphics.

How long does vehicle signage typically last?

For most ute decals and vehicle graphics using premium cast vinyl — which is what we use at MTM Signage — you can expect a lifespan of 5 to 7 years outdoors under normal conditions. That's five to seven years of your business name, number and logo rolling around the Northern Beaches every single day, working as a moving billboard 24/7.

Full vinyl wraps on the sides of trucks or trailers can last a similar amount of time, though the lifespan depends heavily on how the vehicle is stored and maintained.

What affects how long it lasts?

A few factors make a real difference:

Sun exposure — UV is the biggest enemy of vinyl. Vehicles that are parked in direct sun all day will see their graphics fade faster than those kept in a garage or undercover. If you park in the shade when you can, your graphics will thank you.

Surface prep — Signage applied to a properly cleaned and degreased surface bonds far better than graphics slapped onto a dirty vehicle. This is why we always clean the surface thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol before we start. Don't skip this step.

Quality of vinyl — For most ute decals and vehicle graphics, you can expect a lifespan of 5 to 7 years outdoors under normal conditions — provided the right material is used for the job. At MTM Signage we use premium cast vinyl for complex curves, full wraps and larger panel graphics, and high-end polymeric vinyl with a protective laminate for smaller decals on flat surfaces. Both are quality materials built to last — the difference comes down to what the job demands, and we'll always advise which is right for yours.

Installation quality — Even great vinyl won't last if it's not applied properly. Air bubbles, poor edge adhesion and incorrect tension around curves all reduce lifespan. Proper installation by someone who knows what they're doing is worth every cent.

How to make your vehicle graphics last longer

A few simple habits will add years to your signage:

  • Wash by hand where possible. High-pressure automated car washes can lift edges over time, especially around door handles and bumpers.

  • Avoid pressure washing directly at the edges of your graphics. If you do use a pressure washer, keep it at a low setting and a distance.

  • Don't wax over the graphics — use a vinyl-specific detailer instead.

  • Park undercover when you can. Even a carport makes a difference over years of Sydney summers.

When should you replace your vehicle signage?

The obvious signs are fading, peeling edges or cracking. But there's another reason worth considering — your brand evolving. If your logo, phone number or business name has changed, updating your vehicle signage is one of the most visible rebranding moves you can make. Nothing undermines a professional image like a van with an old number on the side.
