Planning a wedding on Sydney's Northern Beaches is a genuinely beautiful experience. The venues are stunning, the light is incredible and the setting does a lot of the work for you. But one thing couples often leave too late — or forget about entirely — is signage.
Good wedding signage does more than just look pretty. It guides guests, sets the tone the moment they arrive, and adds those personal finishing touches that make your day feel considered and complete. Here's a practical guide to what you actually need, what's optional and when to order it.
The essentials — what every wedding needs
These are the pieces that every wedding benefits from, regardless of size or style.
Welcome board
Your welcome board is the first thing guests see when they arrive. It sets the tone for the whole day and gives guests that immediate sense that they're in the right place. A well-designed welcome board in your wedding colours and fonts instantly elevates the feel of your venue entrance.
For Northern Beaches weddings — whether you're at a clifftop venue in Avalon, a beachfront location in Manly or a club venue in Newport — a welcome board on an easel at the entrance works beautifully with almost any setting.
Directional signs
If your venue has multiple spaces — ceremony area, reception room, bar, bathrooms — directional signs save your guests the awkwardness of wandering around. They're especially important for outdoor venues and properties where the layout isn't immediately obvious on arrival.
The popular additions
These aren't strictly essential but they're incredibly popular for a reason — they add personality and practicality.
Seating chart
If you have assigned seating, a printed seating chart is a much more elegant solution than individual escort cards. A large format seating chart displayed on foam board or acrylic near the entrance is one of the most photographed pieces of wedding signage — guests always stop to find their name.
Bar and drinks signs
A simple sign listing your signature cocktails or bar menu adds a fun, personal touch and keeps the bar running smoothly. Popular options include "His & Hers Drinks", a signature cocktail menu or a simple "Open Bar" sign.
Dessert and cake table signs
If you have a dessert table, grazing board or wedding cake display, a small sign naming the items or adding a personal message ties the whole display together beautifully.
Order of ceremony board
For outdoor ceremonies where printed programs aren't practical, an order of ceremony board is a lovely alternative. It gives guests a clear guide to the ceremony without the waste of individual printed booklets.
What to think about for Northern Beaches venues specifically
If your wedding is outdoors or partially outdoors — which many Northern Beaches weddings are — there are a few practical things to consider when choosing your signage.
Wind is the big one. A light foam board welcome sign on an easel is beautiful on a still day but can be a problem if you're exposed to a sea breeze at a clifftop venue. Heavier substrates or weighted easels are worth discussing with your signage supplier.
Sunlight is another consideration. Glossy finishes can create glare in direct afternoon sun, so if your ceremony or reception faces west, a matt finish is often a better choice.
When should you order your wedding signage?
This is probably the most common question we get asked and the honest answer is — earlier than you think.
We recommend ordering your wedding signage at least 4 to 6 weeks before your wedding date. This gives enough time for the design process, any revisions, production and delivery without any last-minute stress. If your wedding falls during a busy period like spring or the lead-up to Christmas, 8 weeks is even better.
The seating chart is the exception — because it depends on your final guest list, you'll often be finalising it right up until a week or two before the wedding. We always recommend leaving the seating chart until last and rushing the other pieces first.
How to brief your signage supplier
To get the most out of your wedding signage, it helps to come with a clear idea of what you're after. You don't need to have everything figured out, but the more direction you can give upfront, the smoother the process will be.
If you already have a design, a style board or even just a few reference images you love, bring those along. If you're not sure where to start, your wedding stylist, planner or florist will often have strong opinions on sizes, finishes and placement that are worth hearing before you brief your signage supplier.
Useful things to share include your wedding colour palette, any fonts or style references, your venue name and layout, the number of guests and tables, and the exact wording you want on each piece. The clearer the brief, the better the result.
